Pay Range: $1,510 - $1,626 per credit
Pay Determination:

Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description:

The AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE Program at Syracuse University seeks to hire a Part-Time Instructor for face-to-face ASL instruction for the Spring 2024 semester.
The Part-Time Instructor should be able to teach one section of ASL 101 (level 1) and potentially one section of ASL 102 (level 2) or ASL 201 (level 3).
Teaching responsibilities will include instruction of four-credits of ASL per course (with approx. four contact hours per week), student consultations, test administration and grading, and the use of technology to enhance learning in the classroom.
This position is a one-semester appointment, with possible renewal based on need and funding.





Qualifications:

  • MA/MS degree in ASL teaching, Deaf Studies, or related field
  • Native or near native fluency in ASL
  • At least three years of prior experience teaching ASL at the college/university level
  • Ability to teach in hybrid or in-person between Monday-Friday, on the Syracuse Main Campus
  • Ability to work with a team to coordinate classes within the ASL program




Job Specific Qualifications:
  • National Certification in ASL teaching or equivalent
  • Experience using the Signing Naturally curriculum or similar ASL curriculum
  • Experience using Blackboard or other online platform for course organization






Responsibilities:

  • Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
  • Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
  • Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
  • Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. You must also notify the department chair of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.
  • Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner.
  • Participating in student recitals or showings.
  • Collect and submit student assessment data for accreditation purposes, if applicable.
  • Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
  • Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
  • Providing an updated CV annually or upon request of the department or school.
  • Participating in departmental meetings or workshops.
  • Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.

Hand dexterity sufficient to demonstrate positions and movements.
