Science and Engineering Associate - LCLS Job ID 6405 Location SLAC - Menlo Park, CA Full-Time Temporary **SLAC Job Postings** **Position Overview:** The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), a Directorate of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Stanford University, and a national user facility, seeks a Science and Engineering Associate Scientist with strong background in STEM and communications and community engagement. The successful candidate will be a member of the strategic development team in the Science and R&D Division (SRD), supporting the LCLS user science program and outreach within SRD and LCLS. The position is a joint role with the Sample Environment and Delivery (SED) group at LCLS. The candidate will join the strategic development team within SRD and support communication needs of the six different science departments within SRD and address current shortcomings in media dissemination of communications. They will devise and execute outreach strategies to connect with target user audiences, and create engaging content across multiple communication platforms, including social media, writing articles, and website copy. The position also entails coordinating participation in conferences or relevant events, monitoring inquiries from website and social media channels, and assisting in the development of outreach materials like brochures and flyers. Collaboration with various LCLS departments, as well as the user community, is essential for gathering information to meet their communication needs. Additionally, the role involves maintaining and updating the organization¿s website on the Drupal platform, focusing on accuracy, consistency, and design enhancements to improve user experience. The role also involves work within the Sample Environment and Delivery Department (SED) group. The candidate will support preparing users for their beamtimes, as well as diminishing the barrier to entry to new serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) user experiments. They will work towards developing a general do-it-yourself test kit for structural biology SFX experiments. They will engage with the SMEs in SED, as well as relevant stakeholders within the facility and the user community, to understand common issues that need identification before beamtime and how to better identify them. The candidate will then develop simple DIY tests for the user to perform on their sample in their home lab, without the use of complicated, niche equipment. They will then identify the best way to disseminate this information to the grander academic and user community. **Note** : This is a 1-year fixed-term appointment with the possibility of extension. Assignment duration is contingent upon project needs and funding. **Your specific Responsibilities include but are not limited to:** + Support experimental user operation of LCLS with an emphasis on sample environment and delivery. + Develop a user-friendly at-home test kit for SFX users to better understand and characterize their crystals before a proposal or awarded beamtime + Use rheological equipment to characterize common SFX sample slurries + Develop heuristic test protocols that capture the appropriate characteristics of sample without the need of niche or expensive rheological equipment unavailable to all users.
