Job Description

About Us

At Dimer Instruments we’re on a mission to revolutionize laboratory and process analytical tools for the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries. Our multi-modal light-based instruments and desktop applications turn raw measurements into actionable insights, enabling scientists and process engineers to make data-driven decisions and satisfy stringent regulatory requirements. At Dimer you’ll be working with a high-quality, high-performing, highly collaborative, and enjoyable team of Engineers and Scientists to create products that make a difference in the world. We have fun while we’re creating great products.

Summary

We’re seeking a passionate Software UI/UX Designer to own the end-to-end design of complex scientific workflows. Our primary software is a windows-based desktop application for data collection and analysis, but the position’s scope also includes the instrument’s SW interface. You’ll translate deep domain requirements into intuitive, efficient interfaces, establish best-in-class UX practices, and build tooling and design systems that scale across products. We want someone who measures success quantitatively, iterates quickly on real user feedback, and refuses to “breathe their own exhaust” by always listening to customers first.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Own Full-Lifecycle Workflow Design: Lead user research, journey mapping, wireframing, prototyping, and high-fidelity mockups for multi-modal analytical instrument UIs.
  • Customer-First Iteration: Plan and conduct usability studies and quantitative A/B tests; synthesize insights to refine flows, interactions, and visual designs.
  • Design System & Toolchain Development: Define and maintain component libraries, style guides, and pattern libraries (e.g., Figma) to ensure consistency and accelerate delivery.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Software Engineering & Applications Scientists to translate product requirements into pixel-perfect screens and interactive prototypes.
  • Data-Driven Advocacy: Establish UX metrics (time-on-task, error rates, etc.) to measure and report on design impact; set targets and champion continuous improvement.
  • Mentorship & Best Practices: Evangelize modern UX methodologies (design thinking, lean UX, accessibility standards) across the organization; coach peers on user-centered design.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Facilitate design reviews and workshops with customers, sales engineers, and regulatory specialists to validate assumptions and align on priorities.

Qualifications

  • Education: BS or higher in Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Graphic Design, or a related field.
  • Experience:
  • 5+ years designing and shipping complex software workflows, ideally for analytical instrumentation, pharmaceutical/biotech, or scientific R&D environments.
  • Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of UI/UX on products with regulatory and data-integrity requirements.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Expert proficiency in industry-standard design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, Axure).
  • Strong understanding of front-end development constraints (HTML/CSS, component-based frameworks).
  • Familiarity with quantitative UX research methods and analytics platforms.
  • Mindset:
  • Deeply customer-centric: seeks and acts on feedback from real end users, not just internal opinions.
  • Quantitative and hypothesis-driven: uses metrics to guide design decisions.
  • Pragmatic: balances best-practice rigor with the need for speed and agility.

Additional Skills

Must have the social “soft skills” required to be collaborative across the organization. Socially adept, able to navigate different groups and functions with competing needs, and able to work with stakeholders to create solutions requiring compromise. Must be able to understand and communicate well in English, both spoken and written, and be able to actively participate in customer testing and subsequent documentation. Must be able to present work in an organized way both for project/progress reviews and design reviews.

Physical Requirements

When working in machine shop, chemistry, or optics lab, appropriate protective gear must be worn including eyewear, eye protection from laser or UV light, lab coats, and closed toed shoes.

Work Environment

Office space, optics lab, chemistry lab, warehouse, and electronics and optical manufacturing space. The employee may occasionally be exposed to moderate noise levels, e.g. from loud fans in electronics equipment. Travel may occasionally be required, e.g. to test labs, customer sites, for conferences and trade shows, or for training.
