THOR Solutions Job Opportunity: Senior/SME Marine Mechanical Engineer

THOR Solutions is seeking a highly motivated senior/SME-level Marine Mechanical Engineer with experience in shipboard auxiliary systems to support the US Coast Guard’s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate will have a background in design, optimization, and integration of marine auxiliary and piping systems, ship machinery, cargo handling, and weight systems, along with familiarity with relevant standards and regulations.

Responsibilities:

1. Provide technical support, documentation, and evaluation of marine vessel operations and equipment, including auxiliary systems, hydraulics, piping, pumps, valves, HVAC, and related components.
2. Develop system documentation and ship specifications.
3. Lead and coordinate review efforts for verification and validation of auxiliary and piping systems in the Mechanical Engineering discipline.
4. Design and evaluate marine vessel operations, review technical data, oversee machinery arrangements, and conduct trade studies.
5. Review design comments from junior engineers and advise on critical design decisions.
6. Mentor junior mechanical engineers in shipboard auxiliary systems, machinery integration, and weight calculations.

Location & Travel:

Primarily onsite at USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC (at least 3 days/week). Some telework may be considered. Up to 10% travel for ship checks.

Physical & Work Environment:

Desk work in an office, with periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments, including confined spaces and ladders.

Compensation & Benefits:

Pay range: $120,000 – $150,000, based on experience. Benefits include paid time off, holidays, 401(k), health insurance options, flexible spending accounts, life and disability insurance, tuition reimbursement, and more.

Requirements:

• U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance.
• Bachelor’s degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering (Master’s preferred).
• 6+ years of experience, with significant experience in marine auxiliary systems and ship machinery.
• Experience leading government or commercial shipbuilding projects and mentoring engineers.
• Knowledge of industry standards (ABS, USN, etc.) and proficiency with productivity software.
